Chimney Rock Named International Dark Sky Park

Ways To Subscribe

Chimney Rock National Monument has been officially designated an International Dark Sky Park by DarkSky International, becoming the state’s 19th certified site.

The monument, located between Pagosa Springs and Durango on the San Juan National Forest, is recognized for having some of the darkest night skies in the region.

Forest Service officials say the designation highlights Chimney Rock’s remote setting and its long-standing cultural and astronomical significance, including historic connections to lunar standstills and solstice events.

The effort was a collaboration between the Forest Service, the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association, and local dark-sky advocates, who collected lighting data and expanded public education.

Officials say the designation will support continued night-sky programs, responsible lighting practices, and long-term preservation of both the monument’s natural environment and its cultural heritage.
