Colorado Parks and Wildlife is investigating a suspected fatal mountain lion attack in Larimer County.
The incident happened January first on the Crosier Mountain Trail, where hikers reported seeing a mountain lion near a person lying on the ground. After scaring the animal away by throwing rocks, the hikers attempted aid, but the adult woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Multiple agencies responded, including Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, and local emergency crews. During the search, officers located and euthanized two mountain lions. It remains unclear whether one or both animals were involved. Wildlife officials say euthanasia is required under state policy when animals are involved in attacks on humans.
Mountain lion attacks are rare in Colorado, with fewer than 30 reported since 1990, and the last fatal incident occurring in 1999.
CPW reminds hikers that mountain lions are more active at lower elevations in winter. If you encounter one, do not run. Make noise, raise your arms or objects to appear larger, maintain eye contact, and slowly back away. Keep pets on a leash, hike in groups when possible, and report sightings to wildlife officials.
