A House committee opened hearings today into the White House's improperly obtaining FBI background files on top Republicans. While the committee looks into the matter, the White House has appointed Charles Easley, a career civil servant originally appointed during the Reagan administration, to be the new head of security. He'll run the office which obtained the files. NPR's Peter Kenyon has more on the story.

This past week, both men were out on the campaign trail pushing their solutions to the problem. Jazz percussionist Mongo Santamaria dies on Feb. 1 at 85. Santamaria scored a Top-10 hit with his version of Herbie Hancock's jazz-funk classic "Watermelon Man" in 1963. He also wrote the song "Afro Blue," later performed and made famous by John Coltrane. NPR's Elizabeth Blair has a remembrance.

After 27 years of mostly losing seasons, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Oakland Raiders 48 to 21 in the Super Bowl. The favored Raiders came into the game with the league's top-ranked offense. NPR's Tom Goldman reports.

A New Jersey state supreme court justice will not face impeachment proceedings. Justice Peter Verniero is accused of misleading the public about the use of racial profiling by state police, but a top lawmaker has said he will block any attempt at impeachment. The owner of Windows on the World, which drew diners to the top of the World Trade Center, is set to open a new restaurant in Times Square. Many former Windows employees will work at Noche, but others are bitter that they weren't hired, NPR's Madeleine Brand reports.
