Discovering Western Fireflies with Entomologist Christy Bills

A cement trail winds through Carpenter Natural Area in Cortez. Natural flora and rocks are on either side of the trail.

If you’ve ever seen fireflies lighting up a summer evening, you know how magical they can be. But many in the West don’t realize these glowing beetles live here, too. Thanks in part to the Western Firefly Project, that’s changing. Entomologist Christy Bills, who leads the project at the Natural History Museum of Utah, joins us to share what makes fireflies so special, where they live in the region, and how everyday people are helping document their presence.

She’ll visit Cortez on Wednesday, June 18th, for a free talk at the Cortez Public Library and a guided firefly walk at Carpenter Natural Area.

The Friends of Carpenter will host evening firefly tours through the rest of June, you can get details and RSVP here.

LP recently moved to the Four Corners from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
