Cortez candidate responds to concerns over business name as local election season takes shape

FILE - Cortez City Hall. Municipal elections this year include contested races for five city council seats.

A candidate for Cortez City Council is responding to questions from community members about the name of his business and its historical associations, as municipal election activity varies across Montezuma County.

Charles P. Borchini Jr. said his business name, “Work Brings Freedom LLC,” reflects personal responsibility and economic independence and has no connection to extremist ideology. The business was registered with the Colorado Secretary of State’s office in October 2025.

According to his Facebook page, Borchini works as a process server in the Four Corners region and is also associated with We Gotcha Served LLC.

At least one resident contacted KSJD with concerns that the phrase resembles language historically associated with Nazi concentration camps, where a German version of the phrase was displayed at several sites during World War II.

In a written statement provided to KSJD, Borchini rejected that interpretation.

“Work Brings Freedom LLC has absolutely no connection to Nazism or extremist ideology,” he wrote. “The name reflects personal responsibility and economic independence.” KSJD asked Borchini whether he was aware of the phrase’s historical use at Nazi concentration camps when he chose the name. He did not directly address that question.

Borchini also said any suggestion of alignment with hate movements is false and damaging, and emphasized his First Amendment rights to express political and personal views.

He encouraged voters to focus instead on issues he considers central to the city, including infrastructure, public safety, redevelopment of vacant buildings, and local economic challenges.

The exchange comes as municipal election activity is uneven across Montezuma County.

In Dolores and Mancos, town board elections have been canceled this cycle after too few candidates filed to run for the number of open seats. Under Colorado election rules, when the number of candidates does not exceed available positions, those candidates are typically declared elected without a ballot.

Cortez, however, is expected to hold contested races for five of its seven council seats, including the seat Borchini is seeking. There are 11 total candidates running for those seats.

Local municipal elections often draw attention to both policy priorities and candidate backgrounds, particularly in smaller communities where campaigns tend to be highly visible and personal.

Borchini said voters should ultimately decide what issues matter most in the race.

Work Brings Freedom LLC has absolutely no connection to Nazism or extremist ideology. The name reflects personal responsibility and economic independence. Attempts to associate it with hate movements are incorrect and defamatory.

You imply that I am a Nazi or aligned with extremist ideology. That is false.

Work Brings Freedom LLC does not support Nazism, antisemitism, or any form of hate. Any suggestion otherwise is inaccurate and damaging.

If you are asserting factual affiliation with extremist groups or ideology, please provide evidence. If not, I expect the reporting to clearly reflect that no such affiliation exists.

If you are here to talk about the real issues that face Cortez: the crumbling infrastructure, the sales tax fiasco, improving public safety, or redeveloping derelict buildings, I am here to talk. Please follow up to schedule an interview.

Associating me with Nazism is a red herring. I am a Christian and an American. I have social media accounts filled with Bible verses, historical speeches, and political rantings. I have a First Amendment right, just like your public radio station. Let the voters decide.
