A Mancos-based musician and producer is documenting the Four Corners creative scene through an interview series recorded in his home studio.
Yves Giraud, a longtime performer, prolific songwriter and music educator, said he started the project after realizing how much talent exists locally, and how much of it can remain unseen in a small region. “I was amazed at the amount of talent in the area… and the support the community constantly gives,” he said.
Giraud said the interviews also help surface the “hyper-local” reality of rural artmaking, where someone’s musical life might not be obvious until they step onto a stage. “In the open mics, I’ve been blown away with the amount of talent that has come through,” he said, describing how new performers can surprise even longtime residents.
The series has now grown to dozens of conversations, and Giraud says there’s no shortage of future guests. He added that the project isn’t limited to musicians, but also includes community members and local businesses who help make performances possible.
Those businesses matter, he said, because venues are the infrastructure of a music scene. “If we didn’t have them, there will be no place to play,” Giraud said.
Giraud is also working on a new recording project with his band Horizon: a live album captured in a single take. He said the goal is to create a recording that reflects what audiences hear at a real show, without edits or studio patchwork.
