KSJD recently spoke with Lenetta Shull, a Republican candidate for Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder.
Shull said she was born and raised in the community and has deep family roots in the area. She described herself as a moderate Republican and said she is running because she wants the clerk and recorder’s office to be clear, helpful and service-oriented.
The county clerk and recorder’s office handles a range of public-facing services, including elections, motor vehicle services, public records and vital records. Shull said she would focus on customer service, clearer information for residents and improving online access to some clerk services.
Shull also said voter education would be one of her priorities. She said many residents do not fully understand how caucuses, assemblies, primaries and local elections work, and said the clerk’s office can play a role in helping the public better understand election systems and deadlines.
On election security, Shull said she believes Montezuma County’s elections are secure and run smoothly. She said public skepticism about elections should be addressed through education, and encouraged residents with questions about the process to consider becoming election judges.
Shull said her background as a medical assistant, her experience with electronic records systems, and her decades of volunteer work with 4-H helped prepare her for the role. She said she would not seek immediate major changes to the office, but would first learn existing systems and look for places where services could be improved.
