The United States Air Force has confirmed four locations in Colorado as among the six finalists for its new Space Command headquarters. Three Colorado Springs locations were named as possible locations—Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Peterson Air Force Base and Schriever Air Force Base—as was Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora.
Redstone Arsenal in Alabama and Vandenberg Air Force in California were also named as finalists.
The command was created in 2018 and will unify all space operations of the military.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reports the city is the "temporary home for the command as it is being formed," with Peterson's General Jay Raymond in charge. Peterson Air Force Base is already home to the current iteration of the Space Command headed by Gen. Raymond.
According to a press release from the Air Force, the next step is to look at each location’s ability to meet the needs of the planned Space Force, as well as cost and environmental impacts.
An announcement on the chosen location is expected this summer.
