One hundred seventy-seven people enjoyed the free Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday at St. Barnabas Church in Cortez. The Rev. Leigh Waggoner says volunteers also delivered 56 meals to the homebound. She says more than 50 volunteers were involved in making the event happen, not to mention those who donated food or money.
The Teec Nos Pos chapter house on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona is scheduled for some major improvements. A press release from the Navajo Nation says President Russell Begaye traveled to Teec Nos Pos on November 20th to sign legislation appropriating $500,000 for renovations. The chapter currently runs all its administrative services from the modest hogan, but holds larger chapter meetings in a warehouse without central heating, plumbing, or a stove. The original building is reportedly more than 30 years old and has roof damage. Legislation authorizing funding to revamp the chapter house had to pass several tribal committees and finally the Navajo Nation Council before coming to Begaye for his signature. Construction is predicted to take one to two years. Meanwhile, the chapter may lease mobile units for meetings and administrative services.
