  • Montezuma County may not have to join a regional council in order to be eligible for funding for broadband expansion.
  • Tuesday is election day for municipalities across Colorado.

Montezuma County may not have to join a regional council in order to be eligible for funding for broadband expansion. On Monday, commission chair Larry Don Suckla said the county learned at a recent meeting with representatives of the state Department of Local Affairs that it can join a regional broadband group known as SCAN, the Southwest Colorado Access Network, rather than the Southwest Colorado Council of Governments. The  commissioners had believed that to be eligible for broadband grants they had to join the COG. They had balked over concerns about the cost and the views of the group, which includes other counties and a number of municipalities. Suckla said the commissioners will evaluate the cost of joining SCAN before deciding whether to become members. The discussion stems from efforts by county IT director Jim McLain and City of Cortez general services director Rick Smith to expand high-speed Internet service to remote parts of the county.

Tuesday is election day for municipalities across Colorado. Voters in Cortez, Dolores, Mancos and Dove Creek all will be choosing town-board members and/or deciding ballot questions. Seven p.m. is the deadline for residents to turn in ballots at their local clerk’s office or vote at the polls, if that is an option in their community.
