  • Southwest Colorado was highly successful in the latest cycle of funding from the state Department of Local Affairs.

Southwest Colorado was highly successful in the latest cycle of funding from the state Department of Local Affairs. In addition to providing $2 million toward the City of Cortez’s city hall renovations and $2 million for Montezuma County’s new courthouse, the state has awarded $2 million to Dolores County. The money will be used to help construct a public service center that will house its road and bridge, emergency services, and GIS departments. The Dove Creek Press says the grant is the largest Dolores County has ever received. In addition, the Town of Mancos received nearly $270,000 toward a $530,000 project to upgrade its water system and install new water lines; and the Town of Dolores garnered $108,000 that will pay half the cost of water and sewer-system improvements, including the removal of sludge from its sewer plant and modernization of its water-treatment plant. The awards were among nearly $38 million in competitive grants provided statewide from the Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Program, which is funded by energy and mineral extraction. All the awards were for the full amount sought, but not every requesting entity in Southwest Colorado was successful. For instance, Montezuma County’s bid for $85,000 for restroom improvements at the fairgrounds was turned down.
