Dolores-Norwood Road Management Continues To Annoy County Commissioners

The Montezuma County commissioners were critical of Forest Service management of the Dolores-Norwood Road at a sparsely-attended town hall in Dolores Monday night.

Chair Larry Don Suckla said last year the county spent $50,000 to put dust retardant on the gravel route but received nothing from the Forest Service. Last winter, the county sanded part of the road for safety reasons and billed the agency but was never reimbursed. Commissioner Keenan Ertel called the management “very irresponsible.” The two parties are in discussions about the county’s taking possession of the 4 miles within its boundaries. Asked if the county would continue to charge commercial vehicles a toll, the board said no. Suckla later asked the crowd how to increase attendance at the evening town halls, events the commissioners began holding recently. The sole suggestion was “free food.”
