City of Cortez Backs Demolition of Old High School

The Cortez City Council is supporting the Montezuma-Cortez School District in its bid for funds to tear down the old high school.

On Tuesday, the council voted unanimously to support a ballot question that asks permission from district voters to use more than $1.8 million set aside for a new sports complex to do asbestos abatement and demolition of the empty school building. The money is not enough to build a new complex and without the funds, the district can’t afford the demolition. Mayor Karen Sheek said any monies left over will go to upgrade the existing Panther stadium.
