The Montezuma County Commission voted Monday to undo a previous cut in a mill levy that funds a portion of the sheriff’s budget.
In 2014, the board had reduced the mill levy for the Law Enforcement Authority from 1.45 mills to 1.2 in keeping with their philosophy of cutting taxes. But because of declining county revenues and increasing demands on the sheriff’s office, the commission opted to restore the original levy. The tax, which is assessed only on citizens in the unincorporated parts of the county, provides more than half a million dollars a year toward deputies’ salaries and more.
