Inadequate Funding Could Complicate Bears Ears Management

Now that the Bears Ears area in southeastern Utah has become a national monument, concerns are growing about how to protect the fragile landscape from too many visitors.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that a key issue is staffing, as only two seasonal rangers currently patrol the nearly 2-million-acre area. But the Republican-controlled Congress may opt instead to keep funding low for President Obama’s newest monuments, which the GOP opposes.
