A Navajo Nation police officer died Sunday after being shot while responding to a domestic-violence situation near the reservation town of Prewitt, New Mexico, 35 miles east of Gallup.
In a release, the tribe said 27-year-old Houston James Largo was a decorated officer who had served for four and a half years. He was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque but died from his injuries. A suspect has reportedly been taken into custody. In a statement, Navajo President Russell Begaye offered condolences to the family and said, “Our nation mourns for you as does the country.” Vice President Jonathan Nez called Largo “an officer who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the life of another.” In a release, Council Delegate Edmund Yazzie, chair of the Law and Order Committee, commented that domestic violence has plagued the Navajo Nation for years.
