Southwestern Water Conservation District Board Members Honored

Southwestern Water Conservation District

Two long-time members of the Southwestern Water Conservation District Board were honored at a meeting April 6th.

John Porter, who had represented Montezuma County on the SWCD board for 26 years, and Steve Fearn, who represented San Juan County for 22 years, were recognized for their service. Porter is a Cortez native who was board president for 10 years and also served as president of the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company and general manager of the Dolores Water Conservancy District. In February, the Montezuma County commissioners voted to replace him with DWCD board member Don Schwindt, saying they wanted a fresh face to represent the county. San Juan County’s commissioners likewise opted to replace Fearn with the general manager of the Lake Durango Water Authority, Charlie Smith.

Gail Binkly is a career journalist who has worked for the Colorado Springs Gazette and Cortez Journal, and was the editor of the Four Corners Free Press, based in Cortez.
