Cortez City Council Hesitates to Weigh In On Industrial Project North of Cortez

Two Cortez residents pleaded with the City Council Tuesday night to express concerns to the county about a proposed high-impact use on the city’s northern boundary.

But, though a majority of the council said they wanted to write a letter, none of them would make a motion to do so. D & L Construction wants a multi-purpose industrial area adjoining the George Geer Bike Trail. Two weeks ago, the council split 3 to 3 on whether to comment, so the motion failed. Tuesday, Chris Eastin and Mike Lavey urged the city to weigh in on the anticipated truck traffic of up to 40 round trips per day and other issues such as noise, dust and smells. Councillor Jill Carlson, the swing vote, said she favored sending a letter, but then the council voiced doubt about whether they could vote more than once on an issue and ultimately did nothing. The proposal comes before the county commission May 8th.
