Extra Parking at Sand Canyon Needs Formal Approval and Funds, BLM Says

Bureau of Land Managment

A Montezuma County proposal for a supplemental parking lot near the popular Sand Canyon trail complex at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is a long way from becoming reality. On Monday, monument Manager Marietta Eaton told the county commissioners the monument needs a formal proposal to start the process. She said the Bureau of Land Management, which manages the monument, is not funding new facilities, so the county and agency would have to seek grants to pay for the parking lot. Commissioner Keenan Ertel said it appears the county and agency are stalemated. Eaton disagreed and said she hopes to work through any obstacles and keep moving forward.
