Avalanche Near Silverton Kills 27-Year-Old Abel Palmer of Durango

San Juan County Sheriff's Office

A 27-year-old Durango man who died Sunday in an avalanche near Silverton, Colorado, has been identified. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the victim, Abel Palmer, in a Facebook post on Monday, saying he was killed in a “skier triggered” avalanche. The Durango Herald reports that the backcountry area where Palmer was skiing is known as Sam’s Trees and is in the San Juan Mountains on Red Mountain Pass at about 11,000 feet elevation.

CORRECTION 1/23, 8:15pm: The San Juan County Sheriff's Office Facebook post misspelled Mr. Palmer's first name as "Able," which KSJD printed in the original story and the headline. However, his personal Facebook profile name is listed as "Abel," as one of our readers pointed out. We have corrected the error.
