Phil Lyman Will Make Bid for Utah State House

Phil Lyman speaks at a December 2017 rally thanking Donald Trump for downsizing the Bears Ears National Monument

San Juan County, Utah, Commissioner Phil Lyman has set his sights on a higher office. He announced Tuesday on Facebook that he is seeking the state House seat currently held by his friend Mike Noel of Kanab, who recently announced he will not seek re-election. Lyman was voted into office in 2010 and won national fame by helping to organize a motorized protest ride into Recapture Canyon near Blanding, Utah.  A federal judge recently ordered that the three commission districts in San Juan County be redrawn and that elections be held in all three this fall. Lyman would have faced a stiffer battle than usual because the new district boundaries give Navajos an edge in two of the districts, including Lyman’s.
