Montezuma-Cortez High School and Southwest Open School were placed on lockdown Tuesday after a report of a man with a weapon in the vicinity of the high school. However, no potential shooter was found. Assistant Police Chief Andy Brock said in an email late Tuesday afternoon that an investigation had produced “lots of hearsay, several people interviewed, no weapon located.” The school district announced the lockdown in an email shortly before noon. A lockdown means the buildings are locked and no one can go in or out. Superintendent Tom Burris said in an email to KSJD that the schools were notified that there might be an individual with a weapon in the proximity of the high school. He emailed, “We were able to get the names of the students who were together at the time. These have been given to CPD and they are taking it from here.” According to online police reports, the initial call came in at 11:41 a.m. and police subsequently began checking security-camera footage and talking to witnesses about reports of a person with a gun near Walmart. At 1:18 p.m., the school district announced that the high school had been given the all-clear by the police. Southwest Open School was taken out of lockdown earlier.
