An investigation is ongoing into a report of a student with a gun in the vicinity of Montezuma-Cortez High School on Tuesday. Cortez police are asking local high-school students and their parents for help in the matter. An online message said anyone with information about recent threats around the high school should come forward and contact police. Both MCHS and Southwest Open School were placed on lockdown Tuesday after the report of a person with a weapon near the high school. MCHS was put on lockdown again on Wednesday after continued threats, and students at both MCHS and SWOS were released early that day. Neither school was in session on Thursday. Assistant Cortez Police Chief Andy Brock told KSJD in an email Thursday that, “Our detectives are all working diligently on it.” At Tuesday night’s school-board meeting, Superintendent Tom Burris said police arrived minutes after being told of the report of a student with a gun that day, but no shots were fired and no weapon had been located. In their message, police provided a QR code that could be used and advised teens they could also contact a trusted adult. Their message said, “Remember, our small community thrives when we look out for each other. We need your help to keep all of our students safe.”
