Cortez police continue to investigate a fatal hit-and-run that reportedly took place late the night of May 18 in downtown Cortez. According to an email to KSJD from Assistant Police Chief Andy Brock, a 66-year-old man was hit while he was crossing Main Street at Harrison. The incident was reported shortly before 11 that night. In his email, Brock said those who called in the incident blocked the roadway to keep traffic away from the man so he would not receive further injuries. Brock said emergency responders provided CPR on scene and en route to Southwest Memorial Hospital. However, the man, who was not identified in the email and could not be identified by KSJD at press time, was pronounced deceased at 11:27. In his email, Brock said, “In the following days officers combed the area and were provided video of traffic on Main Street.” He thanked the businesses for their assistance. In a May 21 post on Facebook, the police department sought help in identifying a vehicle that can be seen in a blurry photo traveling along Main. An update posted by the police department on Tuesday said the owner of the vehicle in the photo has been identified and indicated that the photo was linked to the fatality.
