Approximately 750 people gathered in Cortez’s Veterans Park on Saturday for the third No Kings rally against the policies of the Trump administration.
They joined with more than 8 million peaceful protesters nationwide. Those included estimated crowds of 2,000 to 3,000 in Durango; 2,000 in Montrose; 3,000 in Grand Junction; 600 in Farmington, New Mexico; and 350 in Moab, Utah.
The atmosphere in Cortez was festive, with people singing, knitting, and marching.
Rally-goers carried signs with messages such as “Don the Con Be Gone.” Some wore butterfly-wing costumes and carried signs saying, “This the only orange monarch we want.”
Organizers with Indivisible Montezuma played classic songs by the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Buffalo Springfield, and Country Joe and the Fish.
Numerous drivers on Main Street honked in approval.
Indivisible Montezuma steering-committee member Jo Ellen Dickey told KSJD, “It feels so good to see the community come out. People are smiling.”
She noted that many in the crowd were Baby Boomers who were well familiar with protest movements. Dickey said, “We all know what to do. We have done it.”
But she also noted that there were young people in the crowd as well, saying, “This is exactly what we hoped to see.”
