Montezuma County elects new commissioner, rejects lodging tax increase

Ways To Subscribe

Montezuma County voters have chosen Republican Rodney Cox for the District One seat on the Board of County Commissioners, defeating Democrat Rebecca Busic with about 57 percent of the vote. Cox will replace Commissioner Jim Candelaria who is term-limited. Montezuma County has only ever had one female commissioner, Helen McClellan, who served for one term.

Voters rejected a proposal to increase the county’s lodging tax, with nearly 59 percent voting no. A similar increase in Cortez also appears to have failed, while Mancos voters approved a separate increase in their sales tax.

And on the Navajo Nation, Crystalyne Curley has claimed victory in the presidential election. She is the first woman elected to lead the tribe. Running mate Christopher Deschene has been elected as vice president. Unofficial results give the pair 32,094 votes, compared with 30,979 for Justin Jones and running mate Emily Ellison. Jones says he will not concede and plans to challenge the results in court.

Finally, the race for Colorado’s Third Congressional District between Republican incumbent Jeff Hurd and Democratic challenger Dwayne Romero remains too close to call as of 4pm Wednesday, with election results still being tabulated.
