National Space Council and the Future of Space Policy

Ways To Subscribe

In today’s KSJD Outdoor Report, we take a closer look at the National Space Council’s critical role in shaping America’s space policy. Established to ensure military, scientific, and commercial activities in space work together, the Council prevents duplication, encourages innovation, and fosters collaboration between NASA and the private sector.

While some argue space policy should be left to industry or focused solely on defense, the Council is here to keep space exploration grounded in shared priorities that benefit all Americans, not just private interests. From satellite infrastructure to future missions to the Moon and Mars, coordination is key.

Though revived by President Trump in 2017, the Council’s future is uncertain as it faces potential downsizing and privatization under the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025.
