A committee of the Navajo Nation Council has voted unanimously against approval of the Grand Canyon Escalade Project.

The proposal includes a gondola tram to the canyon bottom near the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers and a Navajoland Discovery Center, specialty stores, restaurants, hotels and more. On October 10th, the Law and Order Committee held a hearing on legislation to authorize the project and provide $65 million for necessary infrastructure. Proponents said it would offer an economic boost, but opponents questioned the cost and whether it would harm sacred sites, and said 66,000 comments have been received opposing it. The Navajo Nation Council will have the final say.
