The cash-strapped Colorado Department of Transportation is looking into charging state drivers a per-mile fee instead of the current gas tax.
In a release, CDOT says about 100 drivers will take part in a pilot study beginning this fall and ending in the spring. It will study mileage-reporting technologies, a manual-reporting option, and other factors. CDOT says the state’s population is expected to double by 2040 to nearly 8 million, straining infrastructure. The agency reportedly faces a funding gap of about $1 billion over the next 25 years.
