Navajo Nation Launches Campaign to Control Feral Dog Populations

The Navajo Nation is launching a campaign to persuade the Diné to “collar, license, vaccinate, and confine” their pets.

The problem of “reservation dogs” has long plagued the tribe, which by some estimates has more than 400,000 at-large canines. The dogs sometimes attack wildlife, livestock and even people. In July of last year, a 3-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack in Seba Dalkai, Arizona, on the reservation. In a statement, President Russell Begaye said, “We want our people to be active and play outdoors, but many are discouraged with many free-roaming dogs on the Nation.”
