Fire Burns Harp Moving and Storage Building in Cortez

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that scorched the interior of the Harp Moving and Storage building on Market Street in downtown Cortez Sunday morning.

Cortez Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Bittle tells KSJD the blaze was called in around 4:20 a.m. by a neighborhood resident walking by. About 17 firefighters from the Cortez, Dolores, and Lewis-Arriola departments extinguished the blaze  by about 7:30. A Harp truck parked on the building’s south side was also damaged but Bittle says the situation could have been much worse without the prompt warning from the pedestrian. Harp Moving is next to the new WildEdge microbrewery. Bittle says the fire started in the structure’s southwest corner and the cause is still under investigation.
