BLM Seeks Public Comment on Sand Canyon Parking Area

The Bureau of Land Management is seeking comments on a proposal to build a parking area near the popular Sand Canyon hiking and biking trail on Montezuma County Road G. The new, more formal parking area would sit east of the current area, which would remain open. The new lot would hold up to nine passenger cars and three vehicles with horse trailers. In a notice, the agency says the project would help meet demand during peak times of trail use and would provide a better space for buses and horse trailers than the haphazard slick rock parking area now in use. A new trailhead and a half-mile of connector trail would have to be built. Public comments will be taken through October 10th on the BLM ePlanning website or by mail and email.
