Nearly 200 horses became mired in mud and died on the Navajo Nation recently, highlighting the magnitude of the tribe’s feral-horse problem. The animals reportedly became trapped in a drying stock pond in Gray Mountain in northern Arizona and were too weak to pull themselves out. In a statement, President Russell Begaye said local chapters need to pass resolutions calling for round-ups, an action that brings tribal and BIA assistance. There are a reported 50,000 to 70,000 feral horses on the Navajo Nation.
