By a margin of just three votes, former Montezuma County Commissioner Larry Don Suckla has officially won the Republican primary for state House District 58. The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office announced Tuesday that a mandatory recount of the race upheld Suckla’s razor-thin win over J. Mark Roeber of Paonia. Local resident Allen Maez commented, “Yes, every vote counts” at Tuesday’s meeting of the Montezuma County commissioners. The 58th district includes the northwestern quadrant of Montezuma County, as well as all or portions of Gunnison, Montrose, Ouray, San Miguel, Delta, Dolores, and Hinsdale counties. Suckla will face Democrat Kathleen Curry of Gunnison in the general election.

The City of Cortez and Cortez Police Department have launched a project to improve safety for all forms of transportation in the city. They are seeking community input about problems and hazards for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and other travelers. The new website https://www.cortezsafestreets.com includes an interactive map where people can give input about places and situations that cause transportation difficulties. The site is already receiving numerous comments. The project’s goal is to complete a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan by spring of next year.
