The Montezuma County commissioners have scheduled a second public hearing June 24 on a proposal to place a Dollar General store at Highway 145 and County Road N. On April 30, 2024, they denied a high-impact permit for the store on a 2 to 1 vote. The Georgia-based corporation that owns Dollar General, Leaf Properties, then sued. A year later, District Court Judge Todd Plewe ordered the commissioners to have another hearing because they did not issue a written decision as required by the county land-use code. Plewe wrote that a written decision from the board of county commissioners “will provide a clear record for the BOCC’s reasoning.” The proposal for the store drew a number of negative comments from local residents at the first hearing and received a unanimous thumbs-down from the county Planning and Zoning Commission before that.
