SNAP License Discounts, Snowpack Concerns, and Incoming Storm

New Mexico residents who receive SNAP benefits are now eligible for a 25 percent discount on hunting and fishing licenses. The New Mexico Department of Wildlife says the program is designed to expand access to outdoor recreation and support food security by making it easier to harvest healthy, natural food. Officials say eligibility will be verified annually in early January, with in-person verification required for those who qualify later in the year.

The past month brought widespread warm conditions with only about half as much precipitation as expected. Most of that fell as rain because of those above average temperatures so snowpack is still lagging and saw little new accumulation. Southwest Colorado is averaging around 55% of expected snowpack for this point in the year.

Light snow is expected to develop early Thursday morning across the northern mountains as another cold front moves in from the northwest. By the end of the storm, snowfall totals of six to ten inches are expected on Colorado’s mountain peaks, with mixed precipitation and little accumulation elsewhere, followed by strong northerly winds on Friday.
