Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has launched its fully staffed Range Rider Program, deploying 11 new range riders alongside two from the Colorado Department of Agriculture to reduce wolf conflicts across the Western Slope. The riders monitor livestock herds and use hazing techniques to deter wolf attacks.
According to CPW, range riders are currently operating in Pitkin, Eagle, and Garfield counties, among other areas. Due to safety concerns stemming from the contentious nature of wolf reintroduction in Colorado, the agency is keeping the identities of the riders confidential.
Most riders began patrolling in April, with some starting early to protect newborn calves and lambs. They will continue monitoring livestock through October.
