The Cortez Public Library has a new director, and with him comes a focus on expanding programs, improving technology, and connecting more people with available resources.
Leroy Harris recently stepped into the role after working in library systems in Arizona and Minnesota. He says he’s excited to return to the Four Corners region and serve the Cortez community.
This summer, the library will kick off its annual summer reading program in early June, with activities and prizes planned throughout June and July. The library also offers weekly programming for younger audiences, including story time on Tuesday mornings and after-school programs on Wednesdays.
Adult programming continues as well, with a weekly crafting group and a monthly movie club that meets after hours at the library.
In addition to programming, Harris says the library is working to improve access to technology. Upgrades to public computers are expected in the coming weeks, aimed at making them more reliable and easier to use.
The library has also received a grant to expand teen technology offerings, including access to a new 3D printer and laptops for hands-on learning.
Harris says one of the most underused resources at the library is its digital offerings. These include free access to professional development tools and test preparation materials for careers in fields like healthcare, education, and the trades.
“Using the library is free,” Harris said. “Everyone is welcome, and we’ll do everything we can to help people find what they need.”
