The Cortez Public Library is heading into May with a full calendar of events for children, teens and adults, along with volunteer opportunities and an unusual visitor outside the front doors.
Library Director Leroy Harris says visitors may notice a Canada goose nesting near the entrance after laying eggs outside the building. Staff say the goose appears to have laid at least four eggs.
The library is also collecting gently used or new books this week for the Friends of the Library book drive. Donations will be accepted through Saturday, May 2. The annual book sale is scheduled for May 7 through 9.
Families can continue attending weekly story time for toddlers and preschoolers every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after-school activities run from 4 to 5 p.m. through the end of the school year, offering snacks, games and activities for children of all ages.
The library’s summer reading program will return in June and July. Harris says the kickoff party is planned for Thursday, June 4, with mini golf set up inside the library and other activities.
Programs for teens in May include a video game event on Friday, May 8, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., along with a Teen Hangout Night after hours on Saturday, May 30, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Adult programs continue as well. The Mahjong Club meets Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. A documentary and discussion on agrivoltaics, which combines solar energy and agriculture, is planned for Monday, May 4, at 5 p.m. Movie night is set for Thursday, May 14, and Coffee, Crafts and Conversations will take place Friday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Residents interested in helping shape library services can also apply for open seats on the library advisory board, including a teen position. Applications are available through the City of Cortez.
