The Navajo Nation has declared a state of emergency in the Shiprock area, where some 27 people in 10 families reportedly had to flee their homes Friday because of flooding.

The Farmington Daily-Times reports the declaration allows resources to be funneled to the Salt Wash area northwest of the city of Shiprock. No one in the families was seriously injured, but the waters washed away structures and killed livestock. The Navajo Times reportsthe Shiprock Chapter is accepting donations of food and water, bedding, toiletries, school supplies and clothing at the chapter house. A GoFundMe account has also been set up for those affected by the emergency.
