The owners of the San Juan Generating Station near Waterflow say the coal-fired power plant could be shut down at the end of 2022.
The Farmington Daily-Times reports that one owner, Public Service Company of New Mexico, says a preliminary analysis found closing the plant’s two remaining units might make economic sense. No decisions have been made yet. In a statement, Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye said the Four Corners region would be “severely impacted” and called on the industry to help employees find other jobs. He asked the Trump administration to waive certain requirements to help keep open both the San Juan plant and the Navajo Generating Station near Page, Arizona.
