Dolores-Based Organization Wants to Bring "Urban Farm" to Cortez

The Cortez City Council on Tuesday unanimously expressed support for a local organization that wants to create an “urban farm” in the city. Needful Provision Incorporated President David Nuttle said his nonprofit, based in Dolores, has been doing such projects for two decades. He said the U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering food-security grants to communities with a high level of poverty and Montezuma County qualifies. The USDA asks councils in communities seeking such grants to consider forming a committee to guide what types of foods could be produced by such a farm, which would be housed in a vacant building. Possibilities include vegetables, poultry and fish. Nuttle said the farm would supply a local food bank and train future farmers. The council approved a letter saying it is willing to consider forming an urban farming committee.
