Remains of Suicide Victim Found Near Sage Hen Identified as 31-Year-Old Erick Hurley

Austin Cope
The road to Sage Hen has been closed since 2017 due to invasive mussel concerns at the boat launch. The remains of Erick Hurley were found about a mile north of McPhee Reservoir.

The body of a local man who went missing in March of last year has been found in a remote part of Montezuma County. Sheriff Steve Nowlin tells KSJD that Erick Hurley was 31 and had been working in North Dakota when he left his job, drove to his parents’ home on Road P, and later vanished. Despite an extensive search, no trace of him was found. But on Friday of last week, Nowlin received a call from two people who had come across human remains in the Sage Hen area a mile north of McPhee Reservoir. The remains were positively identified as those of Hurley, who apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
