Two more brush fires have reportedly been deliberately set in Montezuma County since the sheriff’s office announced early in May that five had been set in the previous two weeks at various locations near county roads. Sheriff Steve Nowlin told the county commissioners on Monday that another blaze was started Friday in the Boggy Draw area north of Dolores and yet another was set along Highway 145. None of the fires caused injury and all were extinguished promptly. Nowlin said the sheriff’s office is getting closer to identifying the arsonist. He called the acts “despicable” and said if the culprit is arrested, his office will press for the person to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The sheriff’s office has asked for the public’s help in reporting suspicious vehicles or activity.
