Montezuma County commissioner candidate Rodney Cox says fiscal responsibility and community involvement are key priorities in his campaign.

Unofficial primary election results are in for Montezuma County, where two contested county-level Republican races led the local ballot.

In the Republican primary for Montezuma County Commissioner District 1, Rodney Cox received 2,016 votes, or 55.4%. Bonnie Anderson received 1,046 votes, or 28.7%, and Diane Fox-Spratlen received 577 votes, or 15.9%.

If the results hold, Cox is expected to advance to the November ballot against Democrat Rebecca Busic, who ran unopposed in the primary and received 1,904 votes.

In the Republican primary for Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder, Jerri Frizzell led Lenetta Shull by a wide margin. Frizzell received 2,446 votes, or 69.7%, while Shull received 1,065 votes, or 30.3%.

Several other county-level Republican races were uncontested. Ellen Black ran for county treasurer, Tyson Cox ran for sheriff, and George Deavers ran for coroner.

Montezuma County’s elections office reported 5,899 ballots cast in the primary.

The results remain unofficial.

Across Colorado, ballots cast by more than 1,000 unaffiliated voters were disqualified from the primary because those voters returned more than one party’s ballot. Unaffiliated voters receive more than one primary ballot, but only one can be counted. The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office says if an unaffiliated voter returns ballots for more than one political party, the ballot will be rejected and none of the votes will be counted.
