Hot, Dry Weather and Mountain Storms Set the Stage for Fire Risk in the Four Corners

Ways To Subscribe

Hot and dry weather is settling into the Four Corners this week, with temperatures steadily rising each day.

From now through Thursday, expect isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms—mostly over the mountains near the Divide and in northern areas. While these storms likely won’t bring much rain, they could deliver lightning and gusty winds, which may spark localized fire weather concerns.

By Friday and into the weekend, storm activity will decrease as high pressure builds. That means widespread sunny skies and temperatures climbing 10 to 20 degrees above normal. Winds will generally stay light, except near thunderstorms.

While conditions remain mostly calm at lower elevations, anyone recreating in the mountains or wildland areas should be alert for sudden changes in weather. Stay hydrated, take fire precautions seriously, and keep an eye on the skies—especially during the heat of the afternoon.

Sunset tonight is at 8:26 PM. Sunrise tomorrow is at 5:57 AM. The moon is new tonight, setting invisibly just before 7:15 PM.

That’s your KSJD Outdoor Report. Stay safe out there.

LP recently moved to the Four Corners from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
