Water Wednesday: Drought and Heatwaves Pose Deadly Combo for Respiratory Health

McPhee Reservoir sits at 6894 feet elevation with a current storage of 263,484 acre-feet. The Dolores River in town is running at 642 cfs, while water below the dam is down to a trickle. The Dolores Tunnel Outlet is flowing at 192 cfs.

A new study based on data from over 180,000 U.S. veterans reveals that overlapping drought and heatwaves more than double the risk of death for people with chronic respiratory conditions. While non-drought heatwaves accounted for under 3% of deaths, drought-linked heatwaves were responsible for more than 7% during warm seasons.

As extreme weather events grow more frequent, researchers suggest that public health warnings should take drought into account—not just heat. Stay hydrated and informed.

LP recently moved to the Four Corners from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
