CPW Defends Wolf Management Amid Rancher Criticism

Ways To Subscribe

Good morning!

I’m Lacy McKay.

Here’s your daily dose of the KSJD outdoor report.

At a Parks and Wildlife Commission meeting in Glenwood Springs yesterday, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Director Jeff Davis defended the agency’s handling of the Copper Creek wolf pack following criticism from commissioner and Carbondale rancher Tai Jacober.

Reporting from the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel says that Jacober argued CPW had mishandled the pack by re-releasing wolves with a history of livestock attacks, leading to continued problems for local ranchers.

Davis pushed back, saying not all members of the pack are chronic depredators and that lethal removal of individual wolves is a common management strategy used to change pack behavior.

He emphasized the agency is monitoring the pack daily and remains committed to following its wolf restoration plan.

Despite use of non-lethal deterrents like range riders and fencing, some ranchers say they’re frustrated by poor communication and continued livestock losses.

That’s the KSJD Outdoor Report for today.

LP recently moved to the Four Corners from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
