First COVID-19 Case Found in Montezuma County

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES

The Montezuma County Public Health Department has announced the county’s first positive case of COVID-19.

A statement issued Saturday by the department says it is currently working on contact tracing with the individual. The department confirmed the individual is a resident of the county but will not provide additional details because of privacy laws.

Southwest Health System confirmed in its own statement Saturday that the case’s test was conducted at its drive-up clinic.

The county’s first case comes after a week of increasing numbers in neighboring counties, including La Plata County recording 18 cases, as of Friday, after announcing its first case Monday. As of Friday, Navajo Nation has recorded two deaths and 92 cases, 10 days after the nation’s first case was announced.

MCPHD’s statement reminded of the importance of Colorado’s statewide stay-at-home order, saying that COVID-19 “will continue to spread if people do not adhere” to the order.

The county has a COVID-19 information helpline at 970-564-4799. General questions should not be directed to emergency dispatch. Southwest Health System also has a COVID-19 information helpline at 970-564-2201.
