A criminal suspect reportedly assaulted two Montezuma County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday in the county courthouse. According to an incident report, 40-year-old Shane French has been charged with two counts of second-degree assault on a peace officer, as well as resisting arrest and failure to appear. The report says French was late for court and went upstairs, where he was told he had a warrant. He then reportedly returned downstairs, walked up to security Deputy Emery Brewer, and punched him in the face and groin. Brewer grabbed French as Deputy Dale Foote rushed over to help. French was wrestled to the floor and handcuffed. Both deputies reportedly sustained minor cuts during the fracas. French, who was uninjured, was taken to jail.
